For this morning’s garden therapy, we cleared out the smooth brome grasses that had completely camouflaged the cactus I’d planted directly next to this buffaloberry shrub that the deer in past years have persisted in abusing.

The shrub’s actually looking its best in a while, so I believe these prickly’s are deterring the rutting damage as I’d hoped.
But really you know… I never been a fan of landmines, of sudden, stealthy, or shock attacks.
And so… to minimize damage all around– the deer’s psychological as well as the shrub’s physical, I believe not only is higher visibility is pleasing (it is now the prickly pear’s flowering season) but it also helps deer avoid self harm if they should even think about rutting this shrub again. I feel I don’t need to sneaky and covertly inflict splinters. A clear message works equally well.
And the garden also feels… more orderly.
Then came a spot that looked perfect for a fairy garden. So of course… we proceeded to make one.
